After completing the course, students will be able to write academically on topics related to their clinical research-track studies. They will be able to recognise, plan and produce academic texts. Students will also be able to account for the needs of different audiences, especially cultural differences relating to perceptions of what is considered to be good academic writing. They will have a greater understanding of the mechanics of writing a research paper. Students should be able to write and punctuate accurately in English, and they will be more aware of technology-enhanced research methods. They will be able to use information-literacy skills to cite and reference sources responsibly. Students will also be able to review and provide constructive feedback on the writing of their peers.

The course will provide tools for continuous language learning and information retrieval as well as raise awareness of sustainability in the context of medicine.

In this course students practice writing academically in English and cover aspects of grammar and lexis. Items include academic vocabulary, textual organization and flow, search strategies and referencing, punctuation and the format and structure of journal articles, narrative reviews and editorials, common writing problems, technical sentences, and editing skills. Students also learn how to use corpus data and collocations as tools to help their own writing. Students use their own texts as the basis of analysis and also get a chance to have their own work reviewed and checked.

For credit, students must actively participate, complete on-line activities, and write a short academic assignment.
