Studies consist of mandatory major subject studies including the Master´s thesis work, elective studies and studies on transferable skills, such as communication and language skills. Each student makes a personal study plan which helps to select the courses, which best suit for personal interests and background.\r\n\r\n**Studies in Drug Discovery and Development** offer a deep understanding of up-to-date methods applied to identify and validate new drug targets and to generate lead drug molecules. Programme also provides knowledge of technological innovations as well as methods of clinical drug research and development phases, clinical trial design, planning of pre-clinical studies and basics of biostatistics. In addition, courses on drug regulatory science and pharmacovigilance give an overview of the regulatory authority duties nationally and worldwide.\r\n\r\nAfter graduation, students are expected to master drug discovery and development processes as well as procedures applied in research and development. Students will be familiar with the role of drug regulatory authorities during the life span of a drug. Students will gain comprehensive skills to work in the field of biomedicine and drug discovery in companies, universities, research institutes or drug regulatory authorities. The programme also provides a good foundation for those interested in entrepreneurship. For post-graduate studies, the University of Turku offers several doctoral programmes, such as Drug Research Doctoral Programme.\r\n\r\n**Prerequisites**\r\nUTU students with a B.Sc. degree in Biomedicine have a possibility to continue their studies in the MDP in Drug Discovery and Development without separate application process. However, if the B.Sc.degree is not completed, the student has to gain approval for a new personal study plan (PSP/HOPS), before enrolling to the MSc studies.\r\n\r\nOther than UTU students with an eligible B.Sc. degree in a relevant field for MDP/DDD, will have a separate application call annually. Eligible applicants should have a nationally recognized first cycle degree – typically a Bachelor’s degree – from an accredited institution of higher education, which corresponds to at least 180 ECTS (European credits) or to three years of full-time study. The B.Sc. degree is expected to be from a relevant field of study, e.g. biochemistry, biomedical sciences, biology, physics, chemistry, pharmacy, or medical sciences.\r\n\r\n**Structure of the studies in DDD**\r\n- Mandatory Studies in Drug Discovery and Development, 57-64 ECTS\r\n- Master’s Thesis in Drug Discovery and Development, 40 ECTS\r\n- Language and communication studies, 0-5 ECTS\r\n- Elective studies, 11-23 ECTS (to fill the remaining of the 120 ECTS)\r\n- Supplementary studies (0-18 ECTS, if needed, not included in the degree)","valueFi":"The Master´s Degree Programme in Drug Discovery and Development is a two-year programme of 120 ECTS credits. In this programme, the language of instruction is English. Studies are completed based on the currently valid curriculum. In case the student has completed a part of the course in accordance with the curriculum valid in the previous academic year, the student has the right to complete the course based on requirements defined in the previous curriculum by the end of August (Master's thesis in Drug Discovery and Development is an exception to this). After this, the requirements for completing the course are determined in the new curriculum. Possible prerequisites are mentioned in the study guide of each curriculum. \r\n\r\nThe Drug Discovery and Development students have a right to study courses provided by the Åbo Akademi University, which are listed in the curriculum as compulsory studies. Students will receive information about obtaining the study right for the compulsory courses at Åbo Akademi in the beginning of their studies. \r\n \r\n**Student guidance and personal study plan (PSP)** \r\nTeacher tutor together with other academic staff and the education coordinator of the study programme provide study guidance. Students compile a personal study plan in the Peppi system and students are personally responsible for updating and following their Personal Stydy Plan (PSP) throughout their studies.\r\n\r\n**Examinations** \r\nIf the course is completed with an examination or a corresponding method, it has to be organised at least three times with the same requirements. The first examination is arranged immediately after the course ends, the latter two examinations have to be organised within one year of the first examination. The dates of the examinations must be announced in the syllabus or at the beginning of the course at the latest. \r\n\r\n**Internship** \r\nThe master's degree can include a (research) internship related to the field of study as an optional course of 5-10 credits. \r\n \r\n**Thesis** \r\nFor the Master of Science degree, students prepare a master's thesis as a part of the mandatory major studies. The thesis is based on an experimental research project corresponding 4-5 months of full-time work. In the master's thesis, students must demonstrate the their ability for scientific thinking, mastery of the necessary research methods, familiarity with the topic of the thesis and the ability to use scientific language. A person with at least a master’s degree can act as a supervisor. A master's thesis must have at least two examiners. One of the examiners is an expert in the field outside the research group, and the other is usually the responsible Professor of the Curriculum. Examiners are assigned by the Head of the Curriculum authorized by the Head of Department of Biomedicine. The head of the Department of Biomedicine decides on the approval of the Master's thesis on the basis of the opinion of the examiners. The master's thesis is written in English. More detailed practical instructions regarding the theses can be found in intranet: https://intranet.utu.fi/en/units/med/studying/Masters-degree-programmes/DDD/Pages/Master's-Thesis.aspx \r\n \r\n**Evaluating studies** \r\nStudy modules are graded on a scale of excellent, very good, good, satisfactory and sufficient on a scale of 5–1 based on the grade point average weighted by the graded courses’ extent unless otherwise specified in the study guide.\r\n\r\n**Accreditation of studies completed elsewhere** \r\nStudies completed at another university, higher education institution or other institution might be either accepted to be included into the degree studies or to substitute studies that are part of the current curriculum. Education coordinator assesses applications for inclusion and the teacher responsible for the course evaluates applications to substitute a distinct course, respectively. As a general rule, the Center for Language and Communication Studies decides on substituting language studies. Studies completed elsewhere must fulfil the learning outcomes set for the degree and its parts. A course with overlapping content and level with a course in the compulsory major subject studies can't be included in elective studies.\r\n\r\nAccording to the decision of the Center for Language and Communication Studies, language studies completed in other institutions are valid for 10 years. If the studies are older than 10 years, the application for recognition of prior learning is not processed. The decision concerns students who have started their studies at UTU on 1 August 2024 or later.\r\n \r\n**Enrollment and progress in studies** \r\nThe studies are carried out in scheduled order for each semester. If a student completes studies in a deviating order, they must contact the education coordinator to prepare a updated personal study plan for their studies. The completed compulsory studies of the degree are valid for 10 years. The vice dean responsible for faculty education decides on updating outdated studies. The vice dean can request a statement of the education program before making a decision. Course unit parts for courses taken on or after 1 August 2023 will expire if the student does not complete the course in the three years following the semester in which it was taken. However, the application of the expiry rule must not lead to situations which are unreasonable for the student, e.g. in view of the reason for the absence of the student. The student should contact the teacher responsible for the course in good time if the expiry of the course unit part would lead to an unreasonable situation for the student.","valueFi":"The University of Turku Regulation on Studies: https://intranet.utu.fi/en/sites/regulation-on-studies.\r\n\r\n**Completion of studies** \r\nThe Master of Science (MSc) Master’s degree can be completed in two years of full-time studies.
